Overage, per-minute usage, and the three parts of a quote
Buyers keep asking what happens after the included minutes or calls run out. Split a quote into setup, usage, and integration, then compare the same unit. The examples below use only prices published on the vendor pages linked in the tables. The same vendors are listed in the directory, and you can run your own volume in the calculator.
What is overage, and how is it different from the monthly price?
The monthly price buys an allowance of minutes, calls, or units. Overage is the rate after that allowance runs out. Published examples: Marlie charges $0.35 per extra minute on the $49 and $99 plans, $0.30 on the $199 plan, and $0.25 on the $399 plan. Dialzara charges $0.48 to $0.35 per extra minute. Phonely charges $0.25 to $0.30. ViFi charges $0.15, $0.12, or $0.10 per extra AI minute. RingCentral charges $0.50 per extra minute. Trillet charges $0.20. AI-Receptionist.com charges $0.25. Smith.ai live receptionists charge $11.50, $10.50, or $8.50 per extra call. OnCrew charges $0.99 per extra call. Upfirst charges $1.50 down to $0.70 per extra call. PATLive charges $2.99 per minute on pay as you go, then $2.29 down to $1.49 per extra minute as the plan gets larger. Sameday and Jobber Receptionist do not publish an overage rate. 800.com's plans page charges $0.60 per extra minute on Starter and Grow. Reception by ElevenAgents charges $0.45, $0.38, or $0.30 per extra credit. KaiCalls and VirtualPBX list no per-minute overage. Roofr's product page says it does not charge for minutes past 200 today. A missing overage line is not the same as free extra usage.
How do I compare a per-minute price with a per-call or per-unit price?
Use one month of your own volume. Multiply calls by minutes per call before you price a minute plan. A per-call plan ignores length. Smith.ai live Basic is $810 for 90 calls and $10.50 for each call after that, so 100 calls cost $915 whether they last one minute or ten. A per-minute plan cares about length. 100 calls at 3 minutes each are 300 minutes, which is PATLive's $479 plan. A per-unit plan needs the vendor's definition. Newo says a voice call of 30 seconds to 3 minutes is 1 unit, a call of 30 seconds or less is 0.2 units, and longer calls bill in 3-minute increments. Retell AI's plan card is $0.07 to $0.31 per minute, with telephony extra. Rosie at $149 is the 1,000-minute bundle. Rosie also publishes $49 for 250 minutes and $299 for 2,000 minutes. It is not an unlimited flat rate.
When is overage cheaper than moving up a plan?
Price the next bundle and the current bundle plus published overage, using a busy month. On PATLive, 900 minutes is 300 three-minute calls. The $759 plan includes 500 minutes, and 400 extra minutes at $1.79 is $716, so that month is $1,475 before government taxes and fees. The $1,499 plan includes 1,000 minutes, so it costs $24 more at this volume. On Marlie, 400 minutes fits the $99 plan, which includes 500 minutes. Staying on the $49 plan, which includes 250 minutes, means 150 extra minutes at $0.35. That is $52.50, so the month is $101.50, which is more than the $99 plan. Sameday does not publish an overage rate, so a month past 500 minutes has to use the $789 plan for 1,000 minutes or a custom Enterprise quote.
How do I compare quotes that separate setup, usage, and integration?
Read three lines before you compare two monthly prices. Setup is the one-time fee to turn the service on. AgentZap lists $499, waived on a 6-month Professional term. Smith.ai live receptionists, Abby Connect, Allo, Newo, KaiCalls, and Roofr say there is no setup fee. If a quote has no setup line, ask. A blank is not zero. Usage is the allowance plus overage, and the unit has to match: minutes, calls, unique customers, or Newo units. Integration is a phone system, a CRM, or a software plan the receptionist sits on. Jobber Receptionist is $29 a month and requires a Jobber plan. Plus includes it, and Plus is listed from $280 a month when prepaid annually. That pricing page does not say how many conversations $29 includes. JustCall phone seats are $29, $49, or $89 per user per month billed annually, with a 2-user minimum, and the AI voice agent is $0.15 a minute after 100 free minutes. CloudTalk phone seats are extra. RingCentral AI Receptionist is $49 a month on its own, or $39 a month added to RingEX at $30 a month. Allo's AI receptionist is an add-on on top of a seat. Smith.ai live receptionists include the first CRM integration, and each extra CRM is $0.50 a call.

Common questions
How much does an AI receptionist cost per month?
Published plans we track start at about $10 to $50 a month for a small bundle of calls or minutes, for example KaiCalls Backup at $10 for about 20 calls, AI-Receptionist.com at $14 for 75 minutes, Marlie at $49 for 250 minutes, and Rosie at $49 for 250 minutes. Higher tiers run from about $150 to $900 a month. Newo also lists pay as you go at $0 a month with 50 units once, then $1.75 a unit.
How much does a live answering service cost?
Live answering services staffed by people publish their own plans. PATLive lists pay as you go at $49 a month plus $2.99 a minute, and minute bundles from $99 for 50 minutes through $1,499 for 1,000 minutes, with larger plans up to $6,899 for 5,000 minutes. Smith.ai live receptionists list $300 a month for 30 calls, $810 for 90, and $2,100 for 300, then $11.50, $10.50, or $8.50 per extra call. For 100 three-minute calls, PATLive's 300-minute plan is $479, and Smith.ai Basic plus 10 extra calls at $10.50 is $915. Abby Connect publishes plans from $164 a month for 50 Abby Minutes. A human minute and an AI minute are not billed the same.
Is it cheaper to build my own AI receptionist on a voice AI platform?
Developer platforms bill per minute, for example Retell AI at $0.07 to $0.31 a minute on its plan card, plus telephony and add-ons. Retell's component table also lists speech-to-speech rates of $0.345 and $0.38 a minute, so a configured agent can cost more than the card. Bland AI lists $0.14 a minute. These suit teams that can build and maintain the agent themselves.
How do AI receptionists charge?
Most sell minute bundles with per-minute overage, for example Rosie, Marlie, and Dialzara. Some charge per answered call (Smith.ai, Upfirst, OnCrew), per unique caller (Goodcall), per unit (Newo), per credit (Reception by ElevenAgents, where a phone minute is 1 credit), or a flat monthly price (NextPhone). The unit on the invoice has to match the unit you are comparing.
